Week 8 & 9 Teaching placement. Film Footage

Week 8 & 9 i was unable to work on my artworks due to my teaching rounds, but on the weekend it was the Arthouse's last birthday before they closed down and i managed to get some footage of the night.
In my proposal i stated that i wanted to create a virtual tour of the Arthouse. With this idea i want to create a video where you take the perspective of a patron and experience a night as if you were there yourself. The Arthouse is closing down in April next year after 19yrs of live music, so it is my goal to create this timeless experience using Final Cut Pro.

Swedish director Jonas Akerland produced the music video for the Prodigy, "Smack My Bitch Up," Åkerlund depicts a night out in the city filmed from a first-person perspective, portraying drinking and driving, snorting cocaine, violence, vandalism, nudity and sex. Director Jonas Åkerlund revealed in an interview on the UK Channel 4's '50 Greatest Pop Videos' in May 2010 that the heroin shooting-up scene was done for real by the Director of Photography on the video.

With my footage, i want it all to be genuine, real and raw. To feel as if you are surrounded by friends, drinking a beer, watching the bands and gradually seeing the night through drunken eyes.

Week 7 - Photoshop & Animated GIF

Previously i have never had Photoshop to play around with photographs and resulted to using the limited manipulation tools available in most image previewing programs. The past month i have been playing around with photoshop to edit and manipulate images and also to create animations - which are all really easy.

The two photographs below i have manipulated using Photoshop. One i took in Italy and the other at my work, the Arthouse.
I took a sequence of photographs at the Arthouse to create an animated GIF in photoshop. These photographs were taken of a friends band called The Abandonment. Originally i created the animation with the original images in colour, but found it was not effective in creating the intensive effect of watching a band. I desaturated the image, applied High Pass then Threshold to create the sketch/comic effect. This created the impression you were watching the band from someones diary or a poster you viewed. As if someone had drawn the images from their memory of watching them, incorporating the raw, intensity and powerful display of the music and the musicians.

I have applied all the same effects (desaturate, high pass and threshold) on every image/layer and added the different layers to the animation frames. As i was not using a tripod, the images are slightly from a different angle, which is effective in creating movement with the animation. I had to edit some of the images as the lines did not meet up and stretch them. I started with 8 frames and cut them down to 4 as the movement became too erratic. It took me a while to find the correct sequence in frames so the movement was natural but intense to create the feeling of watching a band live.

Week 6 PROPOSAL and Corel Painter introduction

Today i presented my text artwork as an introduction to my key themes and ideas. The purpose for this style of text art is to determine these main ideas (that are a response from a number of different people and not just my interpretation) that will be portrayed in the sequential artworks. I surveyed around 45 people and used their words to create the Wordle, this then served as a means of brainstorming and collaboration of ideas of the common theme. I like the idea that the artwork is created with the contribution of others and they take part ownership in it.
It was unfortunate i wasn't able to get the photos to create the animated GIF - which is the second part to the text artwork, as these compliment each. Although i can show it next week in class if people are interested - not sure id i can upload it on the blog. I was really interested in the effect Ken used in his presentation of the train. He used a plug-in called Alien skin which blurs everything except the central focus, i will play around with this effect and may use in my final folio if it compliments my intentions and artwork.
First attempt at Corel Painter with the pad was extremely tedious. Mainly due to the fact that the tablet was too small and to get to the other side of the page requires three attempts just to get the mouse to move. Other than than i really enjoy the nature of it, as it feels natural (as if im creating artwork on paper) and provides more control with pressure and accuracy.

Proposal:
The five artworks I intend to create will be based on the Arthouse Hotel, a long-standing live music venue. The closure of the Arthouse is of no surprise, as they have been fighting a 20-year lease that ends in May 2011. Recently the Arthouse has been subject to new liquor licensing fees and regulations, which have put pressure on management to keep both the live music and the bar operating. Of the 19years that the Arthouse has been established I have spent majority of my weekends watching bands and working there for 5 years now. This is only a quarter of the time it has been established, so you can imagine how the Arthouse has impacted many musicians, punters, family and friends for the 19 years it has been supporting live music. The Arthouse to me has been a; live music venue, local pub, friend, home, family, work, an institution, recording studio, community and an art space. So the countdown has begun until this establishment closes and apart of me does as well, and for this reason I intend to capture all these attributes of the Arthouse through my 5 digital artworks.

For one of my artworks I will be focusing on text to communicate my theme and message. Miguel Sanchez’s interactive instillation has inspired me to follow a similar direction to the digital artwork: The only Certainty, Death and TXT’s . This digital artwork is a projection of a skeleton with a speech bubble. An mobile number is displayed underneath which allows viewers to text whatever they like into the speech bubble, therefore taking part ownership in creating the artwork. With this idea I though I could use some digital means to find comments and thoughts, such as text, email, blog or online survey to find out what the Arthouse Hotel means to a lot of people and how they connect with it. I would then set up a digital projection with all the responses sequentially displayed on the wall at the Arthouse’s last birthday in May.
Another Artwork I will use my camera and mobile phone in a similar ways to sleepyurbanite to capture random images and video footage that represent the themes. The images will be manipulated and edited using Photoshop and Bluetooth to every computer or mobile in the class. For another artwork I am looking at making a digital drawing using Corel Painter Essentials and Wacom tablet. Images will be imported into the digital drawing I create and will then be projected into the wall. Looking at the portable worlds website, I was inspired by this form of digital art. Images and words can interpret the themes and messages I have for the artworks, but does not allow the viewer to experience the themes. Therefore I was looking at making a video and to a degree virtual tour of the Arthouse for the viewers to fully comprehend and experience the themes. This will be created using a video camera then edited using imovie. The artwork will then be uploaded onto my ipod for presentation.

Week 5 Collage

Sweetwater http://www.asahi-net.or.jp
Japanese artist Natsuki Kimura, makes a living as a designer and influences are Mark Rothko, Richard Brautigan, Toshinobu Onosato, Warren Zevon. He takes considerable attention to the positioning, space and symmetry of image. Very controlled and simplistic approach.
Collage is an intriguing concept, last year in the Painting and Drawing class we were asked to collage images cut out from magazines. My lecturer told me to freely place images and not let the mind control the positioning. Where as now, we are digitally collaging images and alot of thought is at play with colour, space, line, effects and positioning. I feel like i am caught between the two.

Today i brought in 120 photos i have taken from the Arthouse. I initially selected two images to merge into each other as the background. One of inside the Arthouse and another from the beer garden. I first masked the layer then used the gradient icon to fade the images into each other. I then took a old pool table light from another room at the Arthouse and used the magic wand to outline the designated area. I then masked the layer and painted in black over the areas i wanted to get rid of and to clean up the image borders. I transformed the image (command T) and held shift to hold its shape and selected colour dodge as the effect. As jack the dog is (so called) the owner and security, i magic wand the area around him and transformed his size. The next image was of a band playing and the light manipulated, so once again i used the magic wand to select the image and transformed the size. Another image of a friend playing i imported next to the background layers, i changed the size, masked it and used the gradient effect. The last image i used on the Arthouse symbol and played in on top of the cigarette machine poster and used linear light as the effect. I noticed too much transparency so made the pool table light effect back to normal.
This collage i made today was quite busy and chaotic. I worked their last saturday night on a sold out show, maybe the chaos of that night is still in my mind and subconsciencly portrayed. Today was the first time i have used Photoshop so with the limited tools i used, i believe i have a long way to go, i will look at the online tutorial for Photoshop tomorrow.

Week 3 - Looking at Mobile Phone Art

We carry our mobile phones with us everywhere, why not use them as tools for creating digital art. As with sleepyurbanite, a Chicargo musician/artist has done, capturing her daily life on her mobile phone. An idea which appeals to me for my final project. I have decided to collect resources of all kinds that represents The Arthouse, a live music venue which is threatening to shut down due to new liquor licensing laws. The Arthouse has been a home, workplace, music venue and a family to me for 5 years, only a quarter of the time it has been established, so you can imagine how The Arthouse has impacted musicians and people over the 19yrs.

Bluetooth is a convenient method for transferring and sharing digital art, i found it intriguing to create artworks in Adobe Illustrator to then transfer to mobile phones. I have discovered there are so many options with mobile phone to experiment with.
Adobe Illustrator, Go to Mobile and devices document. Online library - find sony ericsson model. New Document, tick custom size for all selected devices, content type - choose, then click on CREATE. Save as SVG compressed. Bluetooth icon select send file.

Txtualhealing.com
"The Only Centainity, Death and TXT's is another digital artwork which appeals to me. Where a skeleton is projected on a wall and viewers interact by texting what they want the skeleton to say. The interactive nature of this digital art allows views to take part in creating the artwork and to a degree part-ownership. The Arthouse is having its 19th birthday in May and this could be a great idea for everyone to have there say. Ideally i would love to display images from over the years of bands, musicians, friends, colleagues, family, backpackers and allow viewers on the birthday night to have there say by texting. I looked up a couple of webites http://www.ehow.com/how_2172140_text-message-tv-screen.html which explains how to text msg to your computer screen although i think it will be too difficult to manage and operate on the night. Alternatively i could start up a website that displays the images and viewers add there text there. I would then display the website and all the interactive texts recieved on the night.

Week 2 The Text Effect

Text is a powerful way to portray aesthetics, messages and themes in art. Week One i interacted with David Wicks digital art on Rhizome: Time Spent Alone, where text supported visual images of the world. Jenny Holzer's Truisms looks at text in a dominant form where her Trusims appear endless and strong by repetitive use of large red font. When thinking about creating my own digital art using text, i feel its detrimental to be careful with word choice, colours, fonts and size, as all will influence and change the intended effect and message. Alternatively there are other approaches to text art, evident in Ern Malley's poetry "the darkening effect." He didn't have an intended effect or message and instead left it to the viewer to interpret freely (in a slightly mocking way as little sense could be made). Week Two i attempted Ern Malleys poetry and viewed The Zeitgeist Movement website. I pulled random words and sentences from the Synopsis, Psychology, Sociology, Technology and Sustainability pages to create my own poem. I constructed the poem both random and consciously.
I have not worked with Adobe Illustrator previously and found it easy to use with numerous options to support digital art and text. Week Two we brainstormed ideas for a theme or message for our digital art, ideas so far include: The Arthouse, Deutchland, Zeitgeist, Society and Identity. I am leaning towards Zeitgeist and The Arthouse for my digital artworks.

REMINDERS:
Adobe Illustrator - to select letter, right click, create outlines, direct selection tool

My attempt at Ern Malley Poem utilizing The Zeitgeist Movement and in 4 languages:

The new world order, social change.
Our current world exerts and their dominance for a long time.
The norm in our society is this pattern of lazy and corrupt.
Isolated social change has repeatedly been lost by
certain ideas in society of have nothing as a true resource.
Serious distortion of our world.
Time to persue and start looking for this pattern.
For a long time of self perpetuating and exchange and values.
Ability to interfere with our awareness and insight we then see.

Ernste Verzerrung unserer Welt.
Zeit, und nach dieses Muster, zu suchen zu beginnen auszuüben.
Für eine lange Zeit von der Selbstverewigung und Austausch und Werte.

Η νέα παγκόσμια τάξη, κοινωνική αλλαγή.

Week 1

Achievements through this subject: I am keen to start working with Photoshop as i have little knowledge of this application. Working with digital art through means of video, photography, text and mobile. These art mediums are everywhere in our society and yet i pay little attention to creating digital art, as my dominant medium is paint and canvas. I need to further my awareness and understanding to become a confident artist with digital art.

Expectations of this subject: To experiment and explore with different digital mediums and analyse digital art individually and as a whole in society.

Personal Interpretation of Digital Art: Something created/manipulated by means of digital technology.

Rhizome: Time Spent Alone by David Wicks
http://timespentalone.com/destinations/
A "series of daydreams, worries and solitary trips." The digital art only exists on the internet and isnever a fixed art form as views are free to add and build on the artwork.

Some places viewers have added:

WEST END, VANCOUVER "fun people atmosphere and the english bay."
TOKYO "i miss japan."
to get back that feeling that freedom a decade only now
CUBA "someday i hope to meet the rest of my family and visit the beautiful beaches."
ROBERT< SAN FRAN "awesome, oil."
QUIET SEA "to regain my strenght and relax."
ALASKA, "to be truly alone for once."
INTERLAKEN "a beautiful gateway between two lakes."
HONOLULU HAWAII "to eat chinese food."
JOPLIN, MO "because i have no idea whats there."
RIGI SWITZERLAND "look down at switzerland like a bird."
EASTER ISLANDS "to touch those rock faces and make sure they are real."
FANNETTE ISLAND "coffee."

Some places i have added:
CHESKY KRUMOV "for the magical medieval village that it is."
BERLIN "for the art and music"
CARAZ, PERU "to start an adventure."

Time spent alone is a sole adventure where you are taken around the world to places other have listed for various reasons. The solidarity fades as you view more places others list and become to feel like you are all on a virtual adventure together. Hence making the distance of the world much closer and feel touchable.

EXPERIMENTA: Online Art Works
You Were In My Dream - by Isobel Knowles and Van Sowerwine. This online interactive artwork is only a small portion of their real life instillation at Black Box theatre in Melbourne. The online art has minimal interactivity, you are presented with the option to become the main character by uploading a photograph to place on the characters face or choose from the artists faces. The character then engages in activities with some monkeys. The online work was impressive in terms of materials used and design elements as they animated paper cut outs characters and incorporated sound effects, although it was very slow and limited with control for the viewer.
